Husker Volleyball Coach John Cook Says Yoga an Important Part of Training

LINCOLN, NEBRASKA
University of Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook has said that yoga is an important part of his team's training program.
In a 2020 interview with the Lincoln Journal Star, Cook said he began incorporating yoga into his team's training program in 2018. He was impressed with the results. Yoga has now become a regular part of his team's training routine.
"Yoga has been a great addition to our training program," Cook said. "It has helped our players to improve their flexibility, strength, and balance. It has also helped them to focus and relax. I think yoga has played a role in our team's success in recent years."
Cook's players have also spoken about the benefits of yoga. In a 2021 interview with Husker Athletics, Nebraska middle blocker Lauren Stivrins said that yoga has helped her to improve her overall athleticism.
"Yoga has helped me to become a better athlete," Stivrins said. "It has made me more flexible and stronger. It has also helped me to focus and relax. I think yoga is an important part of my training routine."
Cook is not the only successful coach who reaps the benefits of yoga. Many notable coaches have incorporated yoga into their team's training programs. Nick Saban, head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, has also spoken about the benefits of yoga for his players. He believes yoga has helped to reduce their risk of injuries and improved overall performance. Phil Jackson, former head coach of the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, was a big believer in the power of yoga for athletes. He required all of his players to do yoga as part of their training regimen.
